When you are a brand new poker player – it can be very difficult for you to break into the game and to actually be good.  Another thing that might end up getting the better of you in the long run is nerves.  I know that when I first started playing poker, I was a nervous wreck the first few games and now – I learned how to control them.

There are a ton of different ways that you can control your nerves, the first being relaxing.  You need to relax yourself.  Now I know that is easier to say than it is to actually put into practice, but you will learn and honestly, you will feel better whenever you play poker.

The next step is not to compare yourself to any other players.  That is the biggest fault that many newbie players fall into – they compare themselves to other players and that will just torture you in the end.

Poker is a game all based around skill – if you have ever played the game, you already know that.  However, the thing that you might not realize is that poker is a game that you can actually master, you really just have to know how to master it.  Personally, I have found that my ability to read people has really, really helped me in the long run.

Just a quirk of the lips upward or even an inexperienced player hiding their laughter behind their cards is something that you really need to think about.  After all – you are supposed to be paying attention to all of this and weighing what hand the other players might have.

To be perfectly honest – poker is hard however the skills above are something that you need to have.  Reading people, especially people at your table is something you need to know how to do!

Betting and raising in poker is something that should be done on a regular basis.  However, you need to know exactly how to do it in order to psych the other players out – after all, that is exactly what the entire game of poker is all about right?  Getting rid of the other players so you can take home the pot?  Well, when you raise the pot up, you are certainly the shark that is forcing people to confront your bluff.

Most people, unless they are an aggressive player will not raise after it has been done already, however there are a select few that are going to call on your bluff.  That is what you need to be aware of – if you raise, make sure that you do it smartly and make sure that you truly can recover from it.

If you have a pair of twos … odds are, you are not going to be going home with the pot, so do not raise, however if you have a couple of aces … depending on the situation, you might be better off raising.

In the game of poker, there truly are a ton of different reasons why you should raise.  To be honest, most people think that you only need to raise when you have a really good hand and you want to win some more money.  While some of that is true, there are other different reasons that you can raise, however do you know what they are?  That is what we are going to explore in the next few blogs!

The first reason that people raise is because they want some more money.  The pot grows and when you win it, you get more money.  That is a good and logical reason, however that is not always how it works out because you honestly – do not always win remember?  So you need to think about that whenever you are raising.

Now that we have talked about the few points that you need to remember and practice in the game of poker – the next point that we are going to talk about is perseverance.  This is where you do not give up.  To be honest, you will always get a bad hand in poker – at some point and while I am not saying that you need to stick out every single bad hand, but if the hand does have a lot of potential, why are you going to just fold?

Playing out a few bad hands when you are playing poker can seriously pay off and to be quite frank … I think that too many poker players do not take that into consideration, they just think that they should quit right after they do not get the cards that they want … that is not the way to win … at all.

Poker is not an easy game, actually, it is one of the hardest games in the world and you truly need to make sure that you are ready for it when you want to get serious about it!

While practicing is something that is very important, the next step for you learn about in order to be a truly good poker player is going to be patience.  To be perfectly honest, poker players should be some of the most patient people in the world – you have to wait for a lot of different things in the game of poker and if you are not patient, you will seriously not be the greatest poker player that you can be.

One thing that you need to wait for in poker is good hands … this is where you will be spending most of your time waiting.  Good hands in the game of poker do not come around all that often and if you are impatient about them, then they will most likely take a lot longer to come around – so that is why patience is so important.

While I know that it is tempting to think that you have natural talent in the game of poker – and while that might not be all fake, you still need to practice poker.  Playing poker and winning at poker are two very different things and if you want to win, you need to practice.  The old saying, practice makes perfect is very, very true and if you put yourself into a every situation possible in poker during practice, by the time they come about in a real game, you will know exactly how to react.

Now that you know what to look for and when you should bluff, the next step is knowing exactly how you should bluff.  There is such thing as a semi-bluff.  When you are bluffing, it is very important to know when you should use a semi-bluff in order to scare some of those people out and get them to fold.  You can use a semi-bluff when you have just a pair of low numbered cards that could offer you a change at the winning pot.

As you know, how well the bluff is actually done is very telling on whether or not it actually worked and whether or not you are actually going to be able to win with your bluff.  One thing that you need to remember is that many poker players, especially the professional ones and the avid ones know all about bluffs, so you need to keep that in the back of your mind.

Just remember to stay cool, be calm and definitely make sure that you learn how to keep that poker face on!
